In his final tournament, tennis legend Andy Murray decided to salute his long-standing rivalry with Novak Djokovic. Novak Djokovic, always gracious in defeat and victory, was deeply touched by Murray’s tribute but playfully made it known that he would “pass on the lovers part” of their relationship.
As Murray, aged 37, announced that the Paris Olympics would mark the end of his illustrious career, the three-time Grand Slam champion felt it was only fitting to reminisce about the player who had been such a significant part of his journey. Murray’s heartfelt message on Instagram was a nod to his fierce rivalry with Djokovic, a rivalry that saw them engage in many memorable battles on the grandest stages of tennis.
“Rivals, doubles partners, friends and lovers? Thanks for the 25 years of competition @djokernole and good luck for rest of your career,” Murray’s Instagram post read, accompanied by a photo from their playing days.
Djokovic, touched by Murray’s words, shared the post on his Instagram Story and reciprocated with a message of his own: “Andy, I cherished our battles on the court, the times we played doubles together, and the incredible memories we’ve shared as friends. As for being lovers, well, I think I’ll have to pass on that one! Your career has been nothing short of legendary, and your inspiration has touched countless people around the globe.”
Their rivalry began back in 2006 when they faced off as professionals for the first time at the Madrid Masters. From that moment on, Murray and Djokovic engaged in 35 intense matches that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Both players pushed each other to their limits and defined what true sportsmanship and camaraderie on the tennis court should look like.
