In a bustling Wilson store in New York City, the Swiss superstar, Roger Federer, expressed his contentment with where his tennis career has taken him. “I’m very happy where we landed,” he tells TENNIS.com with a smile. Federer, a tennis legend with a bucket list that would put others to shame, has achieved so much in his illustrious career that even he sometimes dreams of more.
Despite his numerous accomplishments, like winning the Australian Open six times, Federer still harbors dreams that resonate with the average person. During one of his final US Open appearances, Federer was battling nagging back issues that made long car rides a hassle. In search of a solution to avoid the cumbersome commute from Manhattan to the Queens courts, he had a brilliant idea – playing in Central Park. “I said to my coaches: Is it possible I can play in Central Park?” Federer recalls.
For most tennis enthusiasts, scoring court time in Central Park is a feat that requires dedication, waking up before dawn, or waiting in line for hours. But, as expected, Federer isn’t like most people. His name alone is enough to open doors and clear paths, even in the hustle and bustle of New York City.
Recently retired after a glorious career, Federer made a return to New York for the US Open. On Day 9 of the tournament, during a night session, his face appeared on the giant video scoreboard at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The moment the PA announcer revealed Federer’s presence, the crowd erupted in jubilation. Federer, ever graceful, stood, smiled, and waved in response to the overwhelming adoration. With five consecutive US Open titles under his belt, Federer is a hero in New York, and his reception reflected that.
Reflecting on his long and successful career, Federer chuckled when the PA announcer mentioned his “20-year anniversary.” “When they announced: ’20-year anniversary!’ I was like, oh my god that’s terrible sounding,” he says with a laugh. But for Federer, every moment, every match, and every triumph has been a part of his incredible journey. And as he navigates retirement and looks back on his remarkable career, Federer remains grateful for every experience and opportunity tennis has brought his way.
