In a devastating blow to her fans, Paula Badosa has made the difficult decision to end her 2024 season on the WTA Tour due to ongoing health issues. Despite this setback, the Spanish tennis star remains determined to represent her country at the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Malaga next month.
The 26-year-old had been playing some of the best tennis of her career this year, reaching her fourth semifinal of the season in Ningbo. However, her hopes were dashed as she suffered a third consecutive defeat in the semifinals after being forced to retire against Daria Kasatkina.
It was apparent that something was not right with Badosa late in the first set, as she appeared unwell on the court. The Russian managed to take the first set 6-4, and after having her blood pressure checked by the doctor, Badosa made the difficult decision to stop the match.
This latest setback comes after Badosa revealed earlier this year that she was dealing with a chronic back issue. The current world No. 14 also had to battle an illness last week, which resulted in her withdrawal from the Wuhan tournament.
“Because of health issues I wasn’t able to play yesterday and won’t be able to play Tokyo unfortunately. My 2024 season has ended,” Badosa shared in a heartfelt announcement. “Has been a very long season where I overcame situations I thought they were impossible. I’m very proud of myself. I’m back where I wanted to be and where l was aiming since my comeback. (one of the best players in the world again). Already looking forward to recover well and prepare to represent my country in Malaga for BJKC. Thank you for the support always. See you soon.”
Reflecting on her chronic back issue earlier this year, Badosa admitted that she was “scared” about the uncertainty of her playing future. Despite the challenges she has faced, Badosa remains resilient and focused on her goal of returning to the top of the tennis world.
As the tennis world rallies around Badosa during this difficult time, fans are hopeful that she will make a full recovery and come back stronger than ever. Her determination and fighting spirit serve as an inspiration to all who face adversity in their lives.
