In the midst of the Tomic controversy in Santo Domingo, new shocking details have emerged regarding the behavior of Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic. A close friend of Andres Andrade has come forward claiming that Tomic called the Ecuadorian player “a cheater” and boasted about his wealth compared to him.
Former world No. 17 Tomic found himself in hot water once again over the weekend, not for his performance on the court, but for his unsportsmanlike conduct. After Andrade defeated Tomic 6-2 6-2 in the Santo Domingo Challenger quarterfinal, Tomic refused to shake hands with the world No. 250. The controversy began when Tomic disputed a call in the second set and was displeased by Andrade’s lack of reaction.
However, the real drama unfolded two days later during Andrade’s final match against Damir Dzumhur, when Tomic showed up in disguise and tried to distract the Ecuadorian player. Tomic’s behavior drew negative attention and left many spectators stunned.
“Andy (Andrade) told me that Tomic is crazy. In the locker room, he insulted him and said even worse things than on the court. Tomic called Andy a cheater and a bad person. He taunted Andy by saying he would only get seven thousand dollars for making it to the semi-finals, while boasting that he has 700 thousand. He even threatened to bring 30 people to Andrade’s next match,” Amador revealed in an interview with Kenny Castro on KC Tenis, as reported in CLAY magazine.
Following the incident, Sandy Sojo, press officer for the Dominican Tennis Federation, emphasized that the tournament organizers were aware of Tomic’s disruptive behavior and did not approve of it.
“People were initially taking photos with Tomic, but his actions soon went too far. Every time Dzumhur won a point, Tomic would clap his hands loudly to distract Andrade,” Sojo disclosed to CLAY.
The shocking unfolding of events in Santo Domingo has left the tennis world in disbelief as the controversy surrounding Bernard Tomic continues to escalate.
